This month, we’re sharing the stories of Open Fly’s highly experienced crew. Led by First Mate Roberto Salinas Hernandez and Second Mate German Andrés Gómez Solis, Open Fly has had many noteworthy catches, but most recently for hooking up and releasing an albino Marlin.

Captain Juan Carlos Fallas

What excites you most about your job?

The anticipation of what surprises each day holds. I love all of the unique experiences from day to day.

How do you approach the daily challenges of your job?

Every day is a challenge because things change from charter to charter. I have to just do what I think is right and keep moving forward!

What values are important to you in your work?

Humility above all and having the wisdom to face day-to-day problems.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Walking the dog, running, strolling.

Favorite pastime or hobby?

Sunsets on the beach.

What is a goal you want to achieve at your age?

At my age, to be economically stable, have a good job, and live a relaxed life.

How do you maintain good relationships with your colleagues?

I just do my best to get along with everyone and not bring any drama to the workplace!

Share a unique experience or decision you made in your career.

For 10 years, I worked in commercial fishing. Instead of killing a lot of fish, I would rather catch them for sport and then release as many as possible.

What qualities do you think are important in teamwork?

Comradeship, responsibility, and wisdom.

Share a memorable achievement or experience in your career.

Capturing an Albino Marlin in a tournament at Los Sueños. We dared to earn respect, and the Maverick made itself known.

What do you enjoy most about interacting with clients and colleagues?

Sharing the amazing fishing of Costa Rica, of course!

German Andrés Gómez Solis

What do you like most about your job?

Every day, I strive to improve professionally and in our client interactions. I love challenging myself in this way, and the growth is so rewarding.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I spend time with my family and love to do some river fishing.

What is a dream you want to make come true someday?

I would love to become a captain of my own boat one day.

When did you first know you wanted to pursue this?

Two years ago, I discovered the beauty of this sport and decided to fulfill my dream.

What value have you added to this team that no one else can?

I try to be as sincere as possible.

What is your favorite memory of working in the company?

The day they told me I would be a mate.

What do you like most about your job?

Easy - I love to ensure that all of our guests have the time of their lives!
