Employee Spotlight: Mayo Guacamayo
Meet Mayo Guacamayo, our friendly feathered greeter!
Mayo Guacamayo lives in the Eco Golf Community here in Los Sueños. He’s a beautiful Scarlet Macaw, which is one of the largest parrots in the world. And while he’s our official guest greeter, he can sometimes take a day or two off, so if you see him, count yourself lucky and give him a wave!
Scarlet Macaws
Scarlet Macaws have a large range in Central and South America and can be found in Costa Rica, Belize, Guatemala, Panama, Mexico, Nicaragua, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. They love to live in tall, deciduous trees in forests or near rivers.
This intelligent, energetic parrot grows up to 32-39” in length. They eat a variety of leaves, nuts, berries, and seeds, using their powerful, hooked beak to break open even stubborn nuts.
They can live over 30 years and are usually found in large groups. The Scarlet Macaw also mates, preening each other and their offspring for hours. When nesting, they find a home in a hollowed-out nook in a dead or dying tree from January to April. During this time they lay 1-2 eggs and keep the babies close to them for about a year.
If you want to see more macaws besides our very own Mayo in Los Sueños, check our Carara National Park or Manuel Antonio National Park. Contact our concierge team for more information on tours, tips, and to make reservations.
