Amazing Costa Rican Wildlife: Albino Marlin

Costa Rica offers up a wealth of amazing, unique wildlife. Our climate and environment are so conducive to such a variety of species - we feel so lucky to spend so much time in such a beautiful place.

Albino whale off the coast of Costa Rica

Recently, you might have come across the viral news of an incredibly rare albino humpback whale spotted off the coast of Costa Rica. Naturally, we were amazed by this incredible animal, which reminded us of our rare encounter with an albino sea creature of our own. However, in our case, it wasn't a whale but an albino blue marlin!

In 2013, we had a group of experienced anglers in town from New York who were in for the catch of a lifetime. After spending the day on Spanish Fly, the team hooked a giant marlin. After an intense hour-long struggle, everyone was shocked when they reeled in a completely albino marlin. Then, after some brief admiration and taking some pictures for souvenirs, the billfish was carefully released back into the wild.

This memory has inspired us to create a new series here on the Maverick Costa Rica blog, sharing some of the other incredible wildlife encounters we have in Costa Rica. Stay tuned for more in the future!
